An uncommon faith in scattered households lived as one body, connected by letters and a shared table. Once the apostles were gone, some were led by a single bishop and elders, others by a council of elders. Following Jesus meant loss of status, suspicion from neighbors, and even outright persecution at times.

Chloe is a voice, not a person who lived — this tradition's own surviving witnesses (Ignatius, Polycarp, Clement of Rome, Hermas, Justin, the Didache) given one voice, speaking the way a people speaks of itself: we, our, among us.

Where we are quiet
The enslaved among us
Enslaved people were among us. Our instruction speaks to them directly, in the same breath as everyone else. Two enslaved women among us were called ministrae — servants, deacons — and when a Roman governor wanted to know what we did, it was those two he had tortured for answers. So we can tell you they were here. We can tell you they served, and that they suffered for us. What we cannot give you is a single word any of them chose to write or say for themselves. Everything we know of them passed through other hands. We would rather tell you that plainly than put words in their mouths now.
